FORTRESS OF KLIS
About fifteen minutes away from Split by car, situated on the top of a cliff above the village of Klis – once a key crossroad between the Mediterranean belt and the Balkan rear – the fortress overlooks Split, the ancient Roman settlement of Salona, Solin, Kaštela and Trogir and most of the central Dalmatian islands.
In its more than two thousand year long history, it served as an ancient stronghold of Illyrians and Romans, as well as a royal castle of medieval Croatian kings and was the region’s most important fortification during the Ottoman wars in Europe. Recently, the fortress was a filming set for the popular “Game of Thrones” series and if familiar with the series, you may get a feeling that you are walking around the city of Meereen.
